 Available Programs:
Economic LiteracySM: Economic Literacy enhances girls' financial competence and confidence, empowers girls to recognize early on that they can exercise control over their financial future, and promotes within girls a sense of economic justice. This program is divided into age-based components: She's On the Money (ages 6 - 8), Dollars, Sense, and Me (ages 9 - 11), Equal Earners, Savvy Spenders (ages 12 - 14), and Futures and Options (ages 15 - 18). |
EnCourageSM: Girls enCourage is an outdoor leadership program for girls ages 12 – 14 that builds girls’ adventure sports skills, fosters their independence, and equips them to be healthy, safe, and active in the outdoors. Girls benefit from adventure sports programs that engage them in a safe, supportive environment. Positive risk-taking develops girls’ bodies and minds, while participation in consistent physical activity as children and adolescents can increase girls’ chances of life-long physical fitness and activity. Girls enCourage establishes a noncompetitive, exploratory environment and puts girls’ needs first, giving them a supportive base from which they can test their limits. |
Media LiteracySM: Media Literacy encourages girls to examine how media messages are constructed, how these messages reflect social values, and how girls' active participation can influence the messages - and values. This program equips young women to think analytically about media messages and ask critical questions. The age appropriate components of Media Literacy are: Media and Me (ages 6-8), Media Smarts (ages 9 - 11), Girls Take Another Look (ages 12 - 14), and Girls Get the Message (ages 15 - 18). |
Operation SMARTSM: OpSMART is organized around the philosophy: equity, exploration, empowerment, and fun. Hands-on activities give girls the opportunity to explore, ask questions, and solve problems. This programs starts girls on the path to careers in math, science, engineering, and technology related fields. On a typical afternoon at Girls Inc. of Santa Fe one can find kindergartners and first graders up to their elbows in bubble solution, trying to figure out if it is possible to make a square, triangle, or heart-shaped bubble, and recording their “findings” on “lab reports” (adapted for their writing skills, of course). Or, one could see second and third graders dressed in scrubs, washing up to “operate” on Zelda, a life size doll with correct internal organs that we use to teach girls about anatomy and to interest them in medical careers. Or, see middle school girls measuring wood to build the bench they designed to give to the youth shelter. |
Preventing Adolescent PregnancySM: Adolescent pregnancy and parenthood present formidable challenges for teens' development into productive and fulfilled adults. Although the nation's teen pregnancy rate has declined, New Mexico still ranks as one of the worst states with regards to teen pregnancy. The Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy program is a research-based and evaluated program that provides girls and young women with the skills, insights, values, motivation, and support to postpone sexual activity as well as to use effective protection to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The program is composed of three developmentally appropriate components: Growing together (ages 9 - 11), Will Power, Won't Power (ages 12 - 14), and Taking Care of Business (ages 15 - 18). We have also developed a component for younger girls that gets them thinking about their bodies. |
